Brookstone Builders, Inc- Storm prep tips

Winter has already left its mark behind but the one that is coming in is set to give us a White Christmas for sure.  Plan for it now to help you get through it safer and healthier. There are a few areas you want to think about, your home or business, vehicle, and family.

I found something  from the National Safety Council,

  • Home fires are more prevalent in the winter months than any other season. Cooking is the leading cause of all winter residential building fires. Other winter fire hazards include space heaters, fireplaces and candles.
  • The cold weather increases your chances of getting frostbite or hypothermia. Between  the years of 1999-2004, an average of 647 people died each year from hypothermia.
  • In 2009, over 16,000 Americans were treated for head injuries in emergency rooms because of playing winter sports (skiing, sledding, snowboarding, snowmobiling).
  • Fatal crashes were 14% more likely to happen on the first snowy day of the season than on days following. It takes drivers a few days to regain their sense of driving in this weather.
  • According to the CDC, most carbon monoxide poisonings happen in January; the second most in December. Carbon monoxide detectors save lives, but less than one-third of American homes have one installed.
Get your home, your car and your family ready for this winter with these safety tips.

Winter, Your Vehicle and You - Make sure your vehicle is ready for winter

Winter Survival Kit - gather the necessary supplies to prepare for a winter emergency.

Shoveling Snow - Shovel safely this winter season.
Preparing for Winter - a checklist to help you get your home and family ready winter.

Use first aid to help someone who may have hypothermia or frostbite. onlineOnline and classroom courses are available through NSC.

Become a more defensive driver with NSC driving courses. Take a course online or in a classroom.

Brookstone Builders, Inc.- Appraisals

Home  appraisals, love them or hate them?   Homeowners who have invested in energy efficient products especially hate them.  In most cases when an appraisal is done the value is not calculated on those products.

Some argue energy efficient products should not add to the value. While others argue that using $5,000 to $10,000 in energy efficient products most certainly should add value.  Then there is a third group who wants to see the proof and see a track record of it.    Whatever group you are a part of now, just know that you may change your ways of thinking.  There are studies being done and money being invested and technology being created to test more energy efficient products so as they say, stay tuned....

Brookstone Builders, Inc.-Efficient products

Last week I wrote about solar panels and how beneficial they can be to the environment and property owner.  Solar panels are hot but if they are not in your budget or you don't qualify for programs, not to worry there are other things out there you can do to try.

Window-  with today's technologies there are windows that have sophisticated glazing systems that have low UV factors, they automatically respond to heat and light conditions.  Consider this,  windows can account for 15% of heating and cooling loss and up 25% of your energy bill.

Thermostat- new thermostats offer real-time weather, humidity control and allows you to monitor energy use and some even allow user to change settings via a mobile app.

Dimmer switch- some brands are now manufacturing self dimmer switches.  The switch has a self calibration feature which will solve any issues of flickering light levels. It also aims to extend the life of the light and create energy savings.

These are just a few, If you are interested in more I am sure if you do your homework you will have many more to choose from.

Brookstone Builders, Inc.- Solar Power

With electricity prices going up more people are turning to solar power.  In August Builder magazine reports the country added 732 megawatts of solar panels in the first quarter of 2013 (Builder Magazine 2013).  This is largely in part due to all the government incentives that are out there.  If you can take advantage of them, get in at the ground level. The incentives that are out there right now will not be out there in a year. Experts say electricity costs will go up not if but when,  so why not use solar energy. It is cleaner more responsible, saves money and increase the value to your home.

Brookstone Builders, Inc.-happy employees

We all know the workforce has changed greatly over the years.  Women are working outside the home, in fact more woman are graduating college than men and woman outnumber men in the workforce.  Some would say it is especially important to keep smart, educated women on the job for the sake of your business's bottom line.  I would agree that it is important to keep any good employee, male or female. It does cost money to hire and train someone versus trying to keep everyone happy by offering the right benefits, promotions, hours, etc. You make your own conclusions after you read the full article, I  found it in Builder, August 2013, Editor's Notes Titled Women's Work.

Building Green-Using Solar Panels

When thinking about "Building Green" something to consider is the use of solar panels.  It is still a relatively young technology, you still don't see many homes or business with solar panels but it could prove to be not only an earth friendly technology but a pocket friendly technology.

If only 5% of Americans used solar energy it would be like taking the equivalent of 7,700,000 cars of the road and removing 89,600,000 pound of Carbon Dioxide from the environment (Vivint.solar).

Here is a little more food for thought;

http://www.foxbusiness.com/industries/2013/03/20/how-to-make-installing-solar-panels-more-affordable/

But before you leap, do your research, ask questions, price things out.

Post Nemo-Clean Up

Nemo may be long gone but the snow that was left behind will be with us for awhile.

Most of us have cleared our driveways, cars, walk-ways and stairs but there are a few other things that need to be cleared and they are just as important.

Fire Hydrants- If you have a fire hydrant in your yard, it too really needs to be cleared.  This could save lives and buildings.  If the Fire Department has to clear a path to a blocked fire hydrant this could make the difference of lives lost , and total loss of sturucture verusus  just partial damage.

Vents- This too can be deadly if vents are clogged with snow.  Unfortunately we have been hearing about that being the case.  Walk around the building and be sure vents are clear, don't forget the vents on the roof as well.

Roofs- If snow is left on the roof it has the potential to act like a sponge absorbing any additional sleet, rain or snow. Flat roofs esepically have the potential to collaspe as they typically don't drain as well.  Be careful when clearing the roof.  If possible the best way to clear the roof is from the ground by using a roof rake.

Sidewalks- If you have a sidewalk in front of your home and your town does not have snow clearing service then you need to clear it of snow and ice.  The streets are more narrow then usual and the snow banks are high.  It is important that walkers stay off the street and the only way they can do that is by having clear sidewalks.

Iciles- Although they look pretty they have the potential to cause alot of damage.  They can lead to ice dams which can tear down gutters, cause leaks, peeling paint, stained ceilings, wrapped floors and damp insulation which can lead to mold. They can also cause damage to people walking under them.  You want to clear them as soon as possible.  Blowing warm air on them is the best and safest way to rid your structure of them.  Knocking them down or using a chisel can also cause damage.

Storm Drains- To prevent local flooding and icing storm drains need to be cleared as well.

Let's all work together on this large task Nemo left behind.  These are money saving as well as life saving tips that we should all practice.  With the potential of more snow, no matter the amount, it is important to take the time now to deal with all snow removal.  You don't want to be left looking back saying, "only if I had removed that snow."

Friday Funny-Storm NEMO In New England

Happy Friday or shall I say Happy Nemo watching.  Be safe all, stay warm.  Be sure to be responsible home owners/business owners and clear all door-ways( including emergency doors and walks), walk-ways, dive-ways, vents, steps, side walks and fire hydrants.  If you have a flat roof make plans to get up there and clear the roof, only once the storm has ended.  One last tip, if you are using snow blowers- if the blades jam, never reach into the blades even once the machine is off.  Use a long stack to unclog the jam.  Also be sure you are clear of all objects as the stack may be ejected from the machine.
